Asking for directions, then checking

Use left, right, and next to in a complete exchange.

Check the destination

Begin with “Excuse me, is the library near here?” Confirm which place you mean before asking how to reach it. The sample uses an imagined neighborhood, not directions to a real destination.

Break the route into actions

For a longer answer, listen for actions and landmarks: go straight, turn left, the café. Repeat the sequence you understood rather than answering only “yes.” That gives the other person a chance to correct a missing step.

Retell it using your own map

Draw three simple buildings, label them, and give each other directions. Keep the first routes to two or three actions. Make them clear before adding more places and a longer chain of direction words.

The conversation

A

Excuse me, is the library near here?

B

Yes, it’s just behind this street.

A

How do I get there?

B

Go straight, then turn left at the café.

A

Is it next to the café?

B

No. After you turn, it’s on your right.

A

Got it. Straight ahead, then left. Thank you!

B

You’re welcome.

Make it a small practice

  1. Name three imaginary buildings.
  2. Describe a route with two direction changes.
  3. Ask the other person to repeat the route and compare.
