A quieter street
One evening, Cloud Harbor’s lights go out. Images stop at home, and signs stop blinking outside. Somebody opens a door to ask whether the problem is only theirs. Another door opens. The person who practices piano upstairs and the person moving flowerpots every morning turn out not to be very far away.
An improvised program
Chairs move into the corridor. The pianist taps a rhythm with two fingers. The gardener tells the story of a stubborn mint plant. The neighbor who writes the longest messages online says only two sentences face to face. Nobody rushes them. A little program takes shape without a host.
When the lights return
The lights return, but the chairs stay for a while. Somebody brings a piece of cardboard and writes a list of things to exchange next time: a familiar recipe, a sound recording, a book already read. The interruption has not made everyone instantly close. It has given them a beginning larger than a profile picture.
Make it a small practice
- Make an exchange card for an interest you know: what can you share, and what would you like to learn?
- Replace “we can talk about anything” with one specific small topic.
- Use the card to start a small discussion without deciding what other people should say.
