Begin with familiar words
Begin with a color, shape, position, or sound. “I chose blue because…” is already the start of a useful explanation. Say what you did and why before reaching for unfamiliar specialist words.
Explain a revision
“At first…” and “Then I…” connect stages of a revision. Explain what you placed first, what you removed, and what you wanted a viewer to notice. The change itself can be part of what you share.
Invite a specific response
End with “What do you notice first?” rather than only “Is it good?” The question invites a concrete response and helps you compare your intention with what another person actually notices.
The conversation
Why did you choose this color?
I chose blue because I wanted the image to feel quieter.
Was that your plan from the beginning?
No. At first I used more colors.
What did you change?
Then I removed some details to make the window stand out.
The window is the first thing I notice now.
Thank you. That’s what I wanted to emphasize.
