PARALLELA WORLD OF YOUR OWN
PARALLEL ORIGINALS / Practice project

Turn an everyday gesture into a phrase

Opening a window, closing a book, or setting down a cup can begin a movement study.

Begin with the ordinary version

Choose a familiar everyday action and do it once without exaggeration. Notice its beginning, change, and ending. You can mime the action without a real object to make it easier to repeat.

Enlarge one feature

Change one feature on the second attempt: a slower beginning, a clearer pause, or a larger path. Keep a clue to the original gesture so you can observe how an everyday action becomes a different expression.

Make a phrase from three versions

Connect the ordinary action, the altered version, and an ending of your choice. You might return to the original scale or stop before completing it. Try a title that goes beyond naming the object, such as Not Quite Leaving.

Make it a small practice

  1. Choose an everyday gesture and observe its three stages.
  2. Enlarge one feature in a second version.
  3. Connect three versions and name the phrase.
