PARALLELA WORLD OF YOUR OWN
PARALLEL ORIGINALS / Practice project

Leave two pauses in eight counts

A movement phrase can become clearer with fewer actions.

Count before filling the phrase

Count evenly from one to eight and mark counts 3 and 4 as stillness. The others can use only hand movements: draw in, reach out, open sideways, return. Music and complicated footwork are unnecessary at the start.

Give stillness a direction

During the pause, decide where the gaze rests and whether the hands retain a clear direction. Stillness is a choice, not a forgotten action. Move the pause to counts 7 and 8 and compare the feeling of the ending.

Record the version you choose

Use the count card to write the actions and pauses into eight boxes. Give the phrase an action word such as Opening or Waiting. If recording it, begin with one view that clearly shows the changes rather than adding edits immediately.

Make it a small practice

  1. Leave counts 3 and 4 still.
  2. Connect the other counts with familiar hand movements.
  3. Move the pause and compare the versions.
